The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra is celebrating seventeen years fulfilling its mission to produce live orchestral performances providing entertaiment, education and inspiration for our northern Michigan community.

Dr. Libor Ondras

After a two-year search, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Board of Trustees announces the selection of Dr. Libor Ondras as the new Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Music Director.Dr. Ondras was the featured guest conductor and soloist for the October 2013 concert in Harbor Springs.

"This is an exciting time," said GLCO board president judy Smith. "Dr. Ondras brings a renewed sense of energy and musical possibilities to our Orchestra. His enthusiasm for his work and for our ensemble is engaging and he brings every qualification one could hope to have in a Music Director. He will be a strong and positive voice for our organization in the community and help us to continue to provide World Class Music, Right Here at Home."

Dr. Ondras is Music Director of the Kent Philharmonia Orchestra of Grand Rapids, presently serves as Director of orchestras, string specialist, and as an assistant professor at Grand Rapids Community College.

He began his studies as a recipient of the Slovak Ministry of Culture fellowship to study viola at the famous Moscow Conservatory. To further his career and experience, Dr. Ondras continued his studies at the Academy of Music Arts in Prague, and completed his M.M and D.M.A. degrees at the University of Houston, TX in 1999. Among the highlights of his graduate studies years are fellowships at the Pacific Music Festival, established by Leonard Bernstein (Japan), the Aspen Music Festival (Aspen, CO), the National Orchestral Institute (University of Maryland), Encore (Cleveland Institute of Music), and Sir George Solti's Carnegie Hall Project. Prior to coming to Grand Rapids, Dr. Ondras served as Director of orchestra, string specialist, and assistant professor at the University of Tampa, Tampa, Florida.

In addition to numerous conducting engagements, Dr. Ondras serves as a guest conductor for the Slovak State Opera, and performed as a professional violist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Grand Opera orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonics. He has given lectures and played recitals for the American Viola Society and International Viola D'Amore Society.
